Electrostatic Disinfection vs. Traditional Fogging: Which Wins for Commercial Facilities?

Facility managers weighing sanitization options need to know how electrostatic spraying compares to traditional ULV fogging. Coverage, dwell time, safety, and cost — here's the honest breakdown.

Both electrostatic disinfection and traditional fogging aim to solve the same problem: distribute an EPA-registered disinfectant across a large facility quickly. But the physics behind each method — and the outcomes they deliver — are very different.

How electrostatic disinfection works

Electrostatic sprayers apply a positive electrical charge to disinfectant droplets as they leave the nozzle. Because most surfaces (desks, chairs, shelving, equipment) carry a neutral or slight negative charge, the charged droplets are actively pulled toward and wrap around 3D objects — including the back, sides, and undersides — instead of only landing where gravity carries them.

How traditional fogging works

ULV (ultra-low-volume) fogging pushes disinfectant through a cold-fog nozzle to create a fine mist that settles onto horizontal surfaces. There is no electrical charge, so coverage is dictated by airflow and gravity. The mist blankets tops of desks, floors, and open shelving effectively, but drops off sharply on vertical and undersides.

Coverage: electrostatic wins on 3D surfaces

For facilities with lots of equipment, cubicles, gym gear, retail displays, or classroom furniture, electrostatic reaches surfaces fogging simply cannot. Independent studies show electrostatic achieves up to 70% less chemical usage for the same or better surface coverage.

Dwell time and re-entry

  • Electrostatic: typical re-entry in 10–15 minutes after the required dwell time on the label
  • ULV fogging: often 30–60+ minutes of downtime while mist settles and evaporates

For facilities that can't afford long shutdowns — schools, medical offices, gyms, warehouses on shift changes — electrostatic minimizes disruption.

Safety and chemical exposure

Because electrostatic uses less chemical per square foot and the droplets are targeted, ambient chemical exposure to occupants and technicians is lower. Fogging saturates the air with disinfectant, which requires stricter PPE and longer ventilation.

Cost per square foot

Electrostatic equipment is more expensive up front, but the reduced chemical volume, shorter downtime, and better outcome documentation typically make it more cost-effective across a service contract — especially for recurring disinfection.

When fogging still makes sense

Fogging remains useful for open, empty spaces with mostly horizontal surfaces (warehouses being reset, empty storage rooms) and for quick large-volume treatments when 3D coverage isn't critical.
