Dialysis Center Cleaning: CMS-Compliant Between-Patient Protocols

7 min readUpdated 2026-07-31By Blue Collar Cleaning Co.

Dialysis facilities operate under CMS ESRD Conditions for Coverage, which specify infection control standards well beyond typical outpatient offices. Between-patient station turnover, machine surface disinfection, and water treatment area protocols all require dedicated protocols.

Between-Patient Station Turnover

  • Remove used supplies to biohazard containers.
  • Wipe all surfaces the previous patient contacted: chair, side table, IV pole, monitor.
  • Apply EPA-registered tuberculocidal disinfectant with full dwell time.
  • Wipe blood pressure cuff and machine touchscreens with manufacturer-approved wipes.
  • Change chair cover; discard prior single-use items.
  • Document turnover in log.

End-of-Day Terminal Clean

Full disinfection of the treatment floor including under stations, water lines, and all high-touch surfaces. Damp mop with disinfectant back-to-front.

Water Treatment Area

This area is typically restricted to trained technical staff. Cleaning crews clean floors and exteriors only — never handle water treatment components without dialysis facility training.
