The 4-Minute Protocol
- Minute 0-1: Remove trash, linens, and single-use items; replace exam table paper.
- Minute 1-2: Spray high-touch surfaces (table, chair arms, keyboard tray, door handles, faucet) with quaternary or accelerated hydrogen peroxide disinfectant.
- Minute 2-3: While dwell time elapses, restock supplies (gloves, gauze, exam paper).
- Minute 3-4: Wipe all sprayed surfaces with clean microfiber, wash hands, exit.
Chemistry That Enables Speed
Accelerated hydrogen peroxide products with 1-minute contact times allow compliant turnovers under 4 minutes. Standard quats need 3-10 minutes and can't meet aggressive turnover targets without compromising efficacy.
When to Break the 4-Minute Rule
Any patient with a known infectious disease (flu, GI, MRSA, C. diff) requires full terminal cleaning — not fast turnover. C. diff specifically requires bleach-based sporicidal disinfectant, not quats or hydrogen peroxide.
