Imaging Center Cleaning: MRI, CT, and X-Ray Room Protocols

6 min readUpdated 2026-08-01By Blue Collar Cleaning Co.

Imaging centers combine multi-million-dollar equipment with high patient turnover — a challenging cleaning environment. MRI suites in particular impose unique restrictions: any ferromagnetic tool taken into the magnet room becomes a projectile hazard.

MRI Suite Protocol

  • ALL cart contents must be MR-safe (non-ferromagnetic).
  • Use dedicated MRI-safe cleaning cart labeled and stored outside the suite.
  • Approved cleaners only — check manufacturer's list for bore surfaces.
  • Never take standard vacuum, buffer, or metal-handled tools into the room.
  • Sign in/out log at the door — MRI safety officer typically owns access.

CT and X-Ray Rooms

Standard cleaning cart is fine. Focus on radiation-safe positioning tools, gantry surface (manufacturer-approved wipes only), and patient table.

Between-Patient Turnover

  • Wipe patient table with approved disinfectant.
  • Change table paper.
  • Wipe positioning pads and straps.
  • Clean control room touchscreens with screen-safe wipes.
  • Empty patient prep area trash.
