Canine parvovirus is one of the most persistent pathogens in veterinary environments. It survives on surfaces for up to a year, resists heat and cold, and is immune to most common disinfectants including quaternary ammonium compounds. Veterinary facilities that don't use the right chemistry can and do transmit parvo between patients.
What Kills Parvo (and What Doesn't)
Effective Chemistry
Only three product classes are proven parvocidal:
- Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) at 1:32 dilution with 10-minute dwell.
- Accelerated hydrogen peroxide at label-specified concentration.
- Potassium peroxymonosulfate (Trifectant/Virkon) at label dilution.
Ineffective Chemistry
Do NOT rely on these for parvo:
- Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats).
- Phenolic disinfectants.
- Alcohol-based products.
- Standard household cleaners.
Facility Protocol After a Suspected Parvo Case
- Isolate the patient in a dedicated ward; treat as biohazard zone.
- Use dedicated PPE, leashes, and equipment that stay in isolation.
- Clean and disinfect isolation ward with parvocidal chemistry after every use.
- Do not book high-risk patients (puppies, unvaccinated dogs) in exam rooms used by a parvo case until full disinfection is complete.
- Steam clean or replace fabric surfaces, leashes, and beds.
