Air quality inside a data hall depends as much on air filtration as on cleaning. A well-maintained filter array captures 90%+ of incoming particulates — but poor cleaning practices can push shed contamination past those filters and directly onto sensitive equipment.

Standard Filter Grades

  • MERV 8: pre-filter, catches large particles.
  • MERV 13-14: standard secondary filter in most data centers.
  • MERV 16 / HEPA: found in Tier 4 facilities and pharma-adjacent installations.

How Cleaning and Filtration Interact

Standard vacuums shed fine particles that overwhelm MERV 13 filters, shortening changeout intervals and driving contamination onto equipment. HEPA-filtered cleaning equipment protects the filter budget and equipment lifespan simultaneously.

Coordinating with Facility Operations

Cleaning schedules should be coordinated with filter changeouts. Deep cleaning immediately before a filter change captures maximum debris in the outgoing filter; cleaning after captures the disturbed load in the fresh filter.
