In raised-floor data centers, the subfloor plenum is a supply air chamber — every particle down there eventually gets pushed up through perforated tiles onto server intakes. Yet it's routinely neglected until a particle count test fails or an equipment failure investigation exposes accumulated debris.
When to Clean the Plenum
- Semi-annually as baseline for active data halls.
- Immediately after construction or renovation.
- When particle counts exceed ISO Class 8 thresholds.
- Before major equipment installations.
- Annually at minimum, even for lower-density facilities.
The Process
- Coordinate with facility for tile-lift approvals and safety plan.
- Lift tiles in a strategic pattern (never adjacent tiles simultaneously — collapse risk).
- HEPA vacuum floor slab, cable trays, and under-tile surfaces.
- Wipe cables gently with dry microfiber; never wet-clean.
- Photograph and log condition; report zinc whiskers, debris, or moisture.
- Replace tiles with correct orientation and airflow direction.
Zinc Whisker Risk
Older galvanized floor structures grow crystalline zinc filaments that can shed onto equipment. If discovered, the plenum requires specialized remediation — not just cleaning.
