UPS battery rooms in data centers are one of the highest-hazard areas cleaning crews encounter. Sulfuric acid, hydrogen gas from charging, and 400+ volt DC bus bars combine to create an environment where a routine cleaning mistake can cause serious injury.
Pre-Entry Requirements
- Escort by facility electrical or MEP staff — never solo.
- Confirm ventilation is running (hydrogen dilution).
- Verify eyewash and safety shower are functional.
- Wear acid-resistant PPE: face shield, apron, gloves, boots.
- Bring acid-neutralizing spill kit.
The Cleaning Scope
Cleaning is limited to floors and non-electrical surfaces — never touch battery terminals, cables, or bus bar shielding. Sweep and damp mop with pH-neutral cleaner. If acid staining is present, apply neutralizer per SDS, wait for effervescence to stop, then rinse.
What NOT to Do
- Do NOT pressure wash.
- Do NOT use ammonia-based cleaners (react with acid).
- Do NOT clean during equalization charging cycles.
- Do NOT remove or move any covers, panels, or PPE.
