What zinc whiskers are

Zinc whiskers are hair-thin, electrically conductive crystals that grow spontaneously from electroplated zinc surfaces — most commonly the underside of raised-floor tiles, cable trays, and older equipment cabinets. Whiskers can reach several millimeters in length, break free under airflow, and become airborne. Once ingested by a server, a single whisker can bridge two conductors and cause a catastrophic short.

Can whiskers be permanently eliminated without replacing all tiles?

Encapsulation coatings dramatically slow re-growth and are effective for 3–5 years, but full tile replacement is the only permanent solution. Most clients phase replacement over 12–24 months.

How long does a remediation take?

A 5,000 sq ft data hall typically takes 3–5 nights of change-window work for full HEPA vacuum and inspection. Tile replacement is scheduled separately.
